Can Andy Murray win the French Open this year?

Andy Murray Wimbledon

Without a shadow of a doubt, Andy Murray is one of the best tennis players on the planet right now. While the British number one has won just two Grand Slam titles since bursting onto the scene in 2008, he is widely regarded as the main rival to Novak Djokovic. The Serbian has stood tall at the top of the world rankings for well over a year now and will be keen to win a first French Open title this summer.

However, Murray may leave Djokovic disappointed at Roland Garros once again if he brings his A-game on the clay court. In 2015, the 28-year-old was phenomenal on clay but fell short in the French Open despite winning a number of warm-up events. As it turned out, Djokovic suffered a shock defeat to Swiss star Stanislas Wawrinka in the final – a result that denied the Serbian all four Grand Slam crowns last year.

This year, it’s all about Djokovic and Murray. If the Serbian performs at his very best, he will be incredibly difficult to stop – especially as he has simply overpowered his opponents in recent times. In March, he defeated Rafael Nadal to claim his tenth victory in 11 matches against the ‘King of Clay’ and will now set his sights on pipping the Spaniard to the French Open title in a couple of months.

As of March 20th, Djokovic is priced at 4/6 with Coral to win the French Open title but many punters will already be focused on Wimbledon betting markets ahead of this summer’s highly anticipated grass court Grand Slam event. Wimbledon is arguably the most prestigious event on the tennis sporting calendar and while the French Open at Roland Garros will attract plenty of attention, Wimbledon is the one that everyone wants to win.

For Murray, the French Open title would be nice but a second success in front of his home fans at Wimbledon must be the main priority – especially considering his decision to take some time off after the Australian Open. Will 2016 be Andy Murray’s year?Potentially not if Djokovic has his way but the British number one is well priced at 7/2 with Coral to topple the world number one at Wimbledon this summer.

However, tennis’ top two will be fully focused on the French Open for now and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see either player lift the title at Roland Garros this summer. For Djokovic, it’s all about enhancing his legacy as the greatest player of all-time but for Murray, he’s playing for pride and to continue landing blows to his fierce and closest rival. If the British number one is at his best, we could be in for a very special tournament.
